The Palace of Parliament is the second largest administrative building for civilian use in the world by area. It is located in the central part of Bucharest, on the site called Arsenal Hill, bordered by Izvor Street to the west and northwest. It is bordered by United Nations Boulevard to the north, Liberty Boulevard to the east and 13 September Road to the south.
The Palace of Parliament building was constructed during the time when the state was under the leadership of Nicolae Ceausescu. The design of the building project aimed to concentrate all the central organs of the state in a single building. At the same time, the intention was to build an earthquake-safe residence that would withstand even a possible nuclear attack.
The actual construction site began in the 1980s with the demolition of over 7 km² of the old city center of the capital. The official ceremony for laying the foundation stone took place on June 25, 1984.
The building has a total floor area of 365,000 sqm. Among the materials used in the construction of the building are marble, cement, steel, sand, basalt, wood essences, crystal, glass and leather.
The construction includes 9 levels above ground și another 9 underground. There are approximately 1000 rooms - offices, halls, lounges, restaurants accessible only to politicians, libraries, two underground parking lots and a concert hall. The building hosts a whole variety of events, exhibitions or meetings.
Before 1989, the building was intended to be a construction that glorified socialism, communism and totalitarianism. 27 years after the Revolution, it is a symbol of democracy through the institutions it hosts.
