The Botanical Garden of Bucharest
Grădina Botanică The Botanical Garden is located in the Cotroceni district of Bucharest. Inaugurated in 1860, it covers an area of 17.5 hectares (including 4,000 m² of greenhouses). Within it, there are over 10,000 plant species. The first botanical garden in Bucharest was founded in 1860, near the Faculty of Medicine, by Carol Davila. The garden was moved to its current location in 1884 by Dimitrie Brandza, a Romanian botanist, and by Louis Fuchs, a Belgian landscape architect. Dimitrie Brandza is one of the founders of the Romanian school of botany. The garden was damaged during the First World War, when it was used by the German occupation troops, and also in the Second World War, when it was hit by the Anglo-American bombings of April 1944. The "Dimitrie Brandza" Botanical Garden manages plant collections (living and preserved) which it uses for the purpose of student training, scientific research, conservation of phytodiversity, environmental education, and public information. The Botanical Garden Museum is located at the entrance to the Garden, in a building in the Brâncovenesc style. In the museum, over 5,000 plant species are exhibited, including 1,000 exotic species. The Old Greenhouse of the Botanical Garden was built between 1889-1891, following the model of the Greenhouses in Liège (Belgium). The pavilion is arranged like a corner of tropical forest and contains species from several families of exotic plants. Divaro Company recommends that you visit the Botanical Garden of Bucharest!
