Saint Sava National College is one of the oldest and most prestigious educational institutions in Bucharest. It is the direct descendant of Saint Sava College, divided in 1864 by Cuza into the University of Bucharest and the present college. Until 1990, the college bore the name “Nicolae Balcescu High School,” after the 1848 revolutionary, a former student of the high school.
Saint Sava is the name of the old monastery which, in the 16th century, was located in the center, on the site of today’s University. In the monks’ cells surrounding the church, the first higher education school in Romania was founded at the end of the 17th century.
The courses were taught by Greek teachers, and Greek and Latin language and literature, logic, mathematics, rhetoric, and theology were studied.
The language used in the educational process was Greek until 1818, when Romanian began to be used.
Within the college, the first national library of the Romanians was also established in 1836.
Prominent Romanian figures studied at the College, such as: King Michael I, Grigore Alexandrescu, Nicolae Balcescu, Bratianu, Gheorghe Lazar.
Also, over the years, famous teachers taught at the college. Among them we mention Arghezi, Coanda, Gheorghe Lazar, Gala Galaction, Spiru Haret, Eugen Ionescu, Nicolae Iorga, and Vasile Parvan.
