Saint Elefterie the New Church

Saint Elefterie the New Church in Bucharest is an Orthodox place of worship whose construction began in the 1930s. The church is located at 1 Sf. Elefterie Street in Bucharest and was designed by architect Constantin Iotzu. It is the new church, as there is an old church nearby with the same dedication. The foundation stone of Saint Elefterie the New Church was laid on Sunday, June 29, 1935. In the same year, construction work on the place of worship also began, work that lasted 36 years. The church was built from citizens' donations. The largest donation was that of General Ion Georgescu and his wife - one hundred thousand lei. Saint Elefterie the New Church was consecrated by Patriarch Justinian Marina on June 29, 1971. On the same date, the feast of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul was also celebrated. The church impresses through its architectural grandeur and its liturgical space. It was built when the old Saint Elefterie Church nearby could no longer meet the spiritual needs of the population. The iconostasis is imposing, carved in cherry wood, and is unique in Romania. The model was made after an iconostasis in Skopje, Macedonia. The icons on the iconostasis were made by the painter Stan Hermeneanu from Govora, an iconographer renowned for his works. The painting was executed by the painters Keber and Rudeanu, the style adopted by the two being neoclassical fresco painting. The icon of the Mother of God with the Child was painted by Father Arsenie Boca in the Church Altar. This Orthodox place of worship in Bucharest houses part of the relics of Saint Great Martyr Elefterie. His life impresses through holiness and faith. He became a deacon at the age of 16, at 18 a priest, and at 20 Bishop of Illyricum. He lived around the year 100, during the time of the Roman emperor Hadrian.
