Gheorghe Lazăr National College is one of the country's large colleges. It is certainly one of the most select centers of excellence and quality in education in the country.
This prestigious high school in central Bucharest is located in the southern area of Cișmigiu Park, on the corner with Regina Elisabeta Boulevard.
Ruler Alexandru Ioan Cuza founded on January 18, 1860 the second Romanian-language gymnasium in Bucharest and gave it the name “Gheorghe Lazăr”. Gheorghe Lazar is the one who restored the Romanian language to its rightful place as a language of study and was the re-founder of the national schools.
Extracurricular activities are, probably, the most beautiful tradition of the Lazăr students, preserved to this day. One notable activity is journalism. The first magazine of the high school appeared in 1919, was called “Zboruri”, and was founded by Camil Pestrescu. The magazine encouraged the philosophical essay, modern poetry cultivated at the “Sburătorul” literary circle, and literature of ideas.
