Cismigiu Park, the oldest public park in Bucharest, represents a great achievement of the architects and urban planners of the last century. It is one of the main tourist attractions in the central area of the city, being an ideal place for Bucharest residents to relax.
The name ”Cismigiu” comes from the title of ”Great Cismigiu”, referring to the person responsible for supervising the flow of water. In 1799, ruler Alexandru Ipsilanti ordered the construction of two fountains, one of them being built in the north of the present-day garden. For the creation of the garden, 30,000 trees and shrubs were brought in, as well as ornamental plants from Brasov and Vienna.
In Cismigiu Park, there are the ruins of a monastery called La Cetate, the statue of Gheorghe Panu, and the bust of playwright Victor Eftimiu.
In the statuary of Cismigiu Park there are two monuments dedicated to two famous women from Bucharest: Elena Pherekyde (1851-1919) and Smaranda Gheorghiu (1859-1944).
In the western part of the Garden, there is also the famous Writers' Rotunda, made up of 12 marble busts: Mihai Eminescu, Al. Odobescu, Titu Maiorescu, I.L. Caragiale, George Cosbuc, St. Iosif, Ion Creanga, Al. Vlahuta, Duiliu Zamfirescu, B.P. Hasdeu, Nicolae Balcescu, Vasile Alecsandri.
The kiosk located at the park exit was the first newspaper kiosk in Bucharest.
